Gua Sha 101: How to Use a Gua Sha Stone at Home
Share
Gua sha is a traditional East Asian practice that uses a smooth-edged tool to glide across the skin. For facial use, it's become a favorite self-care ritual: a few quiet minutes that feel as good as they look.
What you'll need:
- A gua sha stone (rose quartz, jade, and amethyst are popular choices)
- A face oil or serum to help the tool glide
How to do it:
- Start with clean skin. Apply a few drops of face oil so the stone moves smoothly without tugging.
- Hold the tool flat. Keep it at a low angle, almost flat against your skin.
- Use light pressure. Gentle is the goal. You should feel pleasant pressure, not discomfort.
- Move up and out. Glide from the center of your face outward: along the jawline, across the cheeks, and over the forehead. Repeat each stroke three to five times.
- Finish at the neck. Many people end with gentle downward strokes along the sides of the neck.
Tips:
- Try chilling your stone in the fridge for a refreshing morning ritual.
- Clean your tool with mild soap and water after each use.
- Skip areas with broken skin, active breakouts, or irritation.
Five minutes a few times a week is plenty. Put on calming music, breathe slowly, and let it become a moment that's just for you.
